How did a student secure the IB IBD offer without prior finance experience and background?
Jackson approached us early on, when he had just finished his year 1 studies. So we told him that it would be difficult for him to get into IBD, since he didn’t have any related work experience to boost his pitch. Although he was keen to get into IBD, he had no accounting or business background. Our winning strategy: We assisted him to enrol in our 2- year Career Coaching plan. His problem was weak technical knowledge. But IBD technical knowledge requires you to have a good foundation of accounting for DCF/ valuations etc. So we asked him to take introductory courses in accounting. Secondly, we asked him to not overestimate himself, expecting to crack a BB bank offer within a year. So we encouraged him to defer, take up a summer internship in a private equity firm, and at the same time, he got a placement in a corporate bank, so he accumulated sufficient experience in the banking industry. Later, when he applied for IBD, he would have a better chance and technical knowledge to handle the interview questions. Which he did. Results: In the 1st year, he bagged a private equity offer, and by the second year he got into UBS’s IBD program!!
