How to successfully jump from Commercial / Corporate Banking to Investment Banking?
1. Debt Capital Market:
DCM is the most relevant division (and the easiest division to switch to) as, being a CMB/ Corp Bank MT, you’ll collaborate closely with DCM to issue bonds.
2. Private Banking:
As a CMB/ Corp Bank MT, you’ll deal with corporate clients, such as SME/ Mid-Cap/ Large Corp. A lot of times, the business owners or the high-rank employees would also be the target clients of Private Banking. Therefore, building a solid relationship with clients would help you to jump to Private Banking.
3. Private Equity/ Venture Capital:
The duties involved in CMB/ Corp. Bank include Credit Proposal or Financial Analysis, which are pretty similar to the job duties of PE/ VC, such as company analysis, valuation and industry analysis. Therefore, some people successfully jumped from CMB to PE/VC.
4. Sales and Trading/ Asset Management
The job duties of these 2 divisions have no direct relationship to those of CMB/ Corp. Bank. Therefore, if you would like to switch to these, you may:
- Apply for the S&T & AM Analyst/ Associate Program
- Apply for the Middle Back Office at IBs and switch to front office
- Pursue a Master Degree and apply for IB Associate Program
