Do I need a relevant major to pursue an IB Career?
When Jenny came to us, she was pursuing an Engineering degree. She was determined to transition from technical science into investment banking.
But she was a G5 university student, which is definitely an advantage given the propensity of investment banks and hedge funds to hire from elite universities and programs.
IBs have adopted the trend of hiring people from non- traditional finance backgrounds to allow for diversity in thought, and creative problem- solving for investment-related decisions. She did have SQL and Python knowledge, which again is a new pre-requisite for various roles like trading, pricing, risk management. Certain M&A related positions also favour candidates with Python/ C++ knowledge.
Our strategy: Her application strategy targeted MO/BO like risk management, riding on her quantitative and technical expertise. She bagged two internship offers, including one with JP Morgan Risk team. The following summer, she grabbed offers like FICC trading with a French firm, which she would use to transition to front-office roles.
What we actually did: FO was her real target, but in order to achieve that, we suggested her to play to her strengths, backed her up with loads of prep material to help her clear each interview stage.
