How to plan your career from Year 1 to crack S&T Offers?

May joined us as a Mechanical Engineering freshman with no business background. She was keen to get ibank offers despite lacking an understanding of different investment banking divisions. She took the special 3-year coaching plan. As an engineering student, she had a very busy schedule, so studying to ramp up her business acumen was challenging.

*Our Strategy & Result:*

She cold emailed her way into a CPA firm since they're less demanding, but help with foundational business knowledge. She got a mainland Chinese internship though she didn't learn a lot of practical skills since interns weren't assigned value-adding tasks.

In year 2, she didn't manage to get an ibank role, but instead, she landed a winter internship with PwC and a summer internship with HKMA. Armed with this, she cracked an equity research intern role with CLSA in year 3. In the final year, she successfully got a top-notch summer analyst return offer with an asset management firm. However, she turned down the fund house offer to take up an S&T (sales) role with a higher salary.

What worked in her favor was stepwise meticulous planning, starting earlier than business students. She stayed realistic, strengthening her CV with increasingly better roles. So she didn't need to defer and just applied for analyst programs to cast a wider net.
