You Don't Need a High GPA to crack Analyst offers in Investment Banking! Marcus – Aiming high for an IBD position
Many students can relate to Marcus, who dreamed of breaking into investment banking but had a few roadblocks in the way: a low GPA and a somewhat empty CV. However, he still dreamt big and we wanted to encourage his persistence by working with him to help him to reach his goal.
After he signed up for our 2-year programme, we worked with him at length to help him improve his product and technical knowledge, inclusive of aiding him in familiarising himself with financial modelling and valuation techniques. We then encouraged him to defer for a year so he could take up more internships that would enable him to add more relevant experiences to his CV. To further enhance his capabilities, he took up our Python programming course, as he quickly realised interviewers found this to be highly impressive. He was thrilled when he soon landed an asset management internship with a leading bank in Hong Kong. We suggested that he take up this role as it would be a fantastic means by which he would be able to upgrade his skills and add additional experience to his CV.
Thanks to this experience, Marcus was able to exercise his Python programming skills, he successfully secured a corporate banking internship. In the meantime, he worked hard at his studies to improve his grades, we recommended a number of high-scoring subjects he could take during his second year of university, to raise his GPA whilst also allowing him time to pick up more volunteering experiences. Eventually, through the combined efforts of our support and advice alongside his hard work and dedication, he pulled up his GPA and polished up his soft skills.
These experiences served him well when he eventually scored an interview with a renowned international bank and got the IB position he had always wanted!
