MUST KNOW semester and exam dates! Be prepared!
We hope you all are enjoying your summer break and using your time wisely to prepare for your future career whilst also having some much-deserved rest. Did you know that during a summer break, you could actually squeeze in about 2 to 3 internships, thus having more content for your CV?
Let’s take a quick look at some facts about different HK universities’ semester breaks:
City University of Hong Kong: Their semester break started on May 9, 2023.
✅Which uni started its semester break last?
Hong Kong University: Their semester break started on Jun 22, 2023.
✅Which uni has the longest semester break?
City University of Hong Kong: They have a semester break that is 116 days long.
✅ Which uni has the shortest semester break?
Hang Seng University: Their semester break is only 47 days.
✅Which universities will start the 23/24 academic year the soonest?
HKU/HKUST/HKBU/LingU: These 4 universities will start the new academic year as early as Sep 1.
✅Which universities will be the last to start the 23/24 academic year?
CUHK/CityU/PolyU/HSU/EduHK: These 5 universities will start the new academic year on Sep 4.
The semester break periods mentioned above are for reference only! Some of these semester breaks may seem really long but in fact, they include a Summer Term. Take CityU as an example. Their Summer Term is from Jun 5 to Jul 22 and their official term break is from Aug 7 to Sep 2. For EduHK, their Summer Semester (for programmes that include one) runs until Aug 5.
It’s still early August which means there’s time to keep building up your resume and work on those internship applications, especially as interviews are already underway. Don’t become complacent. Do be proactive in this time. By taking up some internships or even activities, you’ll demonstrate that you’re a go-getter and it will reflect really well on you in interviews.
Now, we know this is a bit early, and definitely not everyone’s favourite topic, but we also wanted to share a list of upcoming exam periods for each HK university. It’s important to know this for forward planning so that you can prepare yourselves in advance and not leave things to the last minute.

- The Hong Kong Polytechnic University: Dec 7 – 22, 2023
- The University of Hong Kong: Dec 8 – 23, 2023
- The Chinese University of Hong Kong: Dec 6 – 22, 2023
- The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology: Dec 7 – 19, 2023
- City University of Hong Kong: Dec 11 – 23, 2023
- Hong Kong Baptist University: Dec 8 – 21, 2023
- Hang Seng University of Hong Kong: Dec 9 – 23, 2023
- Lingnan University: Dec 11 – 22, 2023
