Transitioning from accounting to investment banking- Walter's Success Story

 

Walter was pursuing a BBA degree with a focus on accounting and finance when he first came to us. He had his sights set on entering investment banking but faced 2 major obstacles, that being his slightly weak GPA and the fact that he only had accounting experiences on his CV.

This, however, didn’t deter Walter, who was keen to break into the industry. Thus, we worked with him on honing his knowledge of various products, and we had him join our assessment centre training sessions so he could develop strong skills in managing the challenging interviews that job seekers need to tackle when aiming for investment banking. We helped Walter learn how to capitalise on his accounting strengths as well, to bring them to investment banking, as pursuing accounting helped him develop his numerical and analytical skills to a high degree. Our team also asked Walter to consider deferring for a year as well, for him to gain more work experience. Eventually, he secured a summer analyst role in a firm that specialises in fund administration. He then went on to score a winter internship in an investment management firm which gave him experience in performing financial modelling, a highly valuable skill for those looking to get into investment banking. In the meantime, he was studying hard to pick up his GPA and was successful in raising it to an impressive level by the end of his second year of university.

Walter’s efforts were certainly rewarded, as he then landed an analyst role in the investment banking division of a major bank. We helped him polish his CV after each experience and he was later able to secure a full-time role in asset management for a renowned international bank!
