From Marketing to a Career in Investment Banking- Terrence's Success Story

 

Terrence initially pursued a degree in marketing but within his first year alone, he learned it was not the right career path for him. Having realised his true passion lay in finance, particularly wealth management, he reached out to us for a free demo to explore options. While he had secured interviews, he wasn't successful in getting shortlisted or in some cases had gotten stuck after the video interview stage. Since he was considering switching majors, given his career aspiration and willingness, we encouraged him to take up a more niche specialisation focused on #assetmanagement and #privatebanking

When Terrence came to us, he joined our 2-year programme. First, we worked with him to adjust his CV as his experiences were largely in marketing, reflecting no finance foundation or exposure.

✅ We worked closely with him to highlight tasks he had done that would be more suitable for wealth management such as client-centric tasks, quantifying his efforts / impact achieved, and involvement in devising strategies with his team.

✅ We started working with him on his interview skills to polish up how he presented his experiences to make them sound pertinent to AM/PB internship requirements. We shared resources on latest interview questions and helped him draft his answer scripts. Terrence being especially shy about his language skills, even though he was actually quite capable, joined more group practices (besides one-on-one sessions with specialist coaches) and unscripted mock interviews to learn from peers as well as train on how to answer unexpected questions confidently and persuasively.

✅ Product knowledge would still be crucial, so to get an edge over his peers early on, we shared related materials on investment instruments, portfolio development and calibration, weekly news and impact on investment decisions, etc., besides encouraging him to join investment societies in school along with external networking events.

In his first year with us, he secured both summer and winter finance internships, including a boutique firm and in the subsequent year, Terrence eventually secured 3 offers from his target firms list 🥳🥳

Even though he started off in a very different field, with his hard work and determination, combined with our support, he landed the job he always wanted.
